The CAPS awards were a yearly event that gave recognition to the cream of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian community's entertainers.
'CAPS' was an abbreviated version of Capriccio's, an extremely popular Gay nightclub that entered Sydney's gay culture in 1969. Located at 163Oxford Street, it was right in the heart of the Golden Mile
‘Caps’ was owned by the late Dawn O'Donnell and the club became famous for its unprecedented drag shows. It is widely accepted that the CAPS awards were the precursor to the DIVAS, mainly due to the involvement of the creative talents of Penny Clifford who not only worked on the CAPS awards, but was also a founding member of the DIVAS.
Below is the program and the "BEST DJ" award from the very last CAPS award held in 1990.
